USG tested for fastening Structo-crete
structural concrete panel to cold-formed steel. The allowable
uniform gravity loads and the diaphragm design loads tabled in the ICC-ES Evaluation Report ESR-1792
were generated from tests using the Structural Concrete Panel Screw 8 x 1-5/8" with GrabberGard – Collated
(Grabber screw item # CHS8158JBWG2). This fastener complies with all of the requirements of Section 3.3
of ICC-ES ESR-1792 and is the fastener recommended by USG for the application of
Structo-crete structural
concrete panel as the subfloor on cold-formed steel.
Structo-crete ICC-ES Evaluation Report 3.3 Fasteners:
ESR-1792 The panels must be fastened to the steel floor framing with self-drilling, self-tapping screws complying with
ASTM C954 and C1513. The screws must be No. 8-18 size [0.164 inch (4 mm)diameter] by 1-5/8 inches
(41 mm) long with a minimum 0.36-inch-diameter (9.1 mm) bugle head.
Note Grabber
®
Construction Products used to describe the CHS8158JBWG2 screw as a bugle head (or trumpet head), and so the
Structo-crete ICC-ES ESR-1792 report states “bugle head.” Grabber now designates the screw head as a thin wafer head. Although
the nomenclature has changed, the shape of the fastener has remained the same.
Fasteners for Cold-Formed Steel USG recommends the following screw for fastening
Structo-crete structural concrete panels to cold-formed
steel:
Structural Concrete Panel Screw 8 x 1-5/8"
with GrabberGard – Collated
Item Number: CHS8158JBWG2
Size: #8 (do not use a larger size unless specifically
specified by the structural engineer)
Minimum Length: 1-5/8 in. (minimum)
Finish: GrabberGard (required)
Extras: Winged drill, "reamer nibs" under head
(for countersink)
Note In accordance with ICC ESR-1792, the minimum screw pattern
is 6 inches o.c. along the perimeter of the panels and 12 inches o.c.
in the field of the panels. The structural engineer should specify the
recommended pattern for each application.
